Report: Phillies plan to pursue Rendon or Donaldson despite luxury-tax hit

The Philadelphia Phillies plan to go after Anthony Rendon and are willing to exceed the luxury-tax line in order to sign the free-agent third baseman, sources told Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports. If the Phillies don't land the All-Star, the team will try to add free-agent hitter Josh Donaldson as a potential contingency plan to fill their need at third base, according to Nightengale. Rendon has yet to meet with the Phillies, Nightengale added. Signing the likes of Rendon or Donaldson would push the Phillies over MLB's luxury-tax threshold. The Phillies are preparing to make a run at free-agent third baseman Anthony Rendon, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. He's now the team's "No. 1 target," per the report. If there was any doubt as to the Phillies' all-in intentions after they inked Zack Wheeler, this would seem to resolve it. The organization had spoken of its disinclination to part with draft compensation to land free agents.
